Posted 16/11/00. Public Funding of Resource Related Technical Training[UP]

Read all about the 13 September meeting by clicking here, or in the news section. The AGSEAN committee has worked very hard to present the case for increased funding for mineral resources related technical training which would assist underemployed geoscientists re-enter the workforce. You can help by:

1. Writing to PO Box 1447, West Perth, WA, 6872 or send email to staleys@ozemail.com.au with your training requirements.

2. Distributing the article to help non-mining people understand that geoscientists deserve funding for training.

3. Don't forget to send some encouragement to the committee members as well!.

Posted 10/09/00. AGSEAN Committe Upcoming Meeting with Mike Board![UP]

AGSEAN committee members will be meeting the Minister for Training, Mike Board, 9:30AM Wednesday, 13 September.

Here's the progress of events:

John W: To bring you up to speed, I have had discussions with the Minister for Mines' office and received a written response from our submission, and predictably the news isn't encouraging. They say they are doing all the things we have asked for, within budgetary constraints.

Tim K: I think that we may have an issue of election importance if we can hit both major parties with the mine safety and training issue.

WA annual production of metal ores and concentrates is A$10 billion, Canada C$10 billion and USA US$10 billion. It is a disgrace that WA farmers get about $33 million for technical training, while less than $1 million is spent by WA on mine technical training.

The mine accident situation could be vastly improved by more technical training, and the new Metalliferous Training Package (a slight revision of Eastern States Black Coal Training Package) is going to make the training situation much worse.

Posted 12/07/00. Letter to the Minister: AGSEAN's Wish List[UP]

Posted 12/07/00. Position: Mining Industry Consultant [UP]

From Tim Koehler (AGSEAN Course Co-ordinator): I think it would be helpful to some AGSEAN geologists who want to apply, to point out the site reference in the Professional Job Advert in Sat 8 July West Australian for the above position. The site is www.seek.com.au, and if you search under full time, Perth, Engineering, Oil and Mining, and "Mining Industry Training" it pops up right a way. I have attached a copy. Although we in the Mining and Geoscience Centre are distressed at loosing our program manager, and being placed under "Spatial Information" (GIS, Surveying and Cartography), we would still like a large number of suitable applicants for this position.

Posted 29/06/00. Second Semester Enrolment: Mining Courses  [UP]

Courses for this year suffer a set back because of unexpected cancellation of funding. However, second semester Mining Courses are offered at Leederville TAFE. Click here for details. Keep writing the politicians if you are unhappy about the lack of funding to help you maintain your geological skills!
